‘Nagpur has potential to become industrial hub for defence’

Vidarbha Industries Association (VIA) and Defence Innovators and Industry Association jointly organized Brainstorming Session Nagpur- on National & Global Map of Strategic  Defence Development Hub.  Lt. Gen. (Retd) Ravindra Thodge said  “Entrepreneurs must first start up with manufacturing small components for the defence sector. Once they are in the system, there will be a basket of opportunities for them.”

Prominent speakers were Mr Harshawardan Gune from WOM India, Pune, Dr B P Joshi, Principal, Cummis College, Nagpur, Mr Sartaj Singh, Head Defence Projects, Solar Industries India Ltd., Nagpur, Mr D K Pande, Retired Air Vice-Marshal and presently working with Persistent Systems, Mr Dushyant Deshpande, Coordinator of Defence Cell, VIA and Maharashtra Chapter, Defence Innovator and Industrial Association, New Delhi.

Explaining the scope and challenges by ‘Make In India’ initiative, Thodge continued,“ The relevance of the project is directly linked to the on-going ‘Make In India’ initiative and urgent need to build self-reliance in defence sector. The concept is first of its kind in India and in neighbouring countries.” He said that there was a need to have an integrated holistic approach towards indigenisation wherein it was imperative to build a successful and sustainable PPP model. It would cater to the requirements of all agencies involved providing a one-window solution for defence indigenisation. “The existing private sector involvement is a significant and progressive development. However, it poses limitations given the variety of projects, size, quantity and engineering involved. The proposed hub could serve a solution provider with a collaborative approach thus bringing in small and medium size companies and even academia under one platform to facilitate the indigenisation process.”

Very shortly, a three-day workshop would be organised where Chief Minister of Maharashtra Mr Devendra Fadnavis will be invited accompanied by big players in the sector. They will interact with the local entrepreneurs and give them broad perspective of the initiative.

Dr B P Joshi made a presentation on futuristic weapons and emerging areas in detail.

Mr Harshawardan Gune presented the case study of engineering cluster of Nashik and clusters in India.

Mr SartajSingh explained the importance of geographical location of the city. Mr D K Pande said that sky was the only limit in aeronautical sector.“With Government initiatives like ‘Ude Desh Ka Aam Nagarik (UDAN), the scope is wide for new entrepreneurs.”

Need to exploit existing strengths of city : Mr Dushyant Deshpande explaining the outline and proposed project. He further said, “Nagpur is poised to be placed on the global map of technology and innovation as a strategic sector. The given strengths like availability of infrastructure, positivity and broad vision of the leaders, skilled manpower, connectivity, diversity and upcoming projects in the region will make it a right place to establish an ecosystem to facilitate the Make in India defence hub.” He noted that the hub would help generate business for MSMEs ensuring growth, generating employment and facilitating defence manufacturing including innovation. According to Mr Deshpande, the industrial hub will consist of PPP model as common facility centre, industrial plots (forging, casting, machining, moulding, mechatronics, etc.), quality control and test set-up, tooling and industrial engineering support, research and innovation wing, defence museum, residential area, international convention facility. The hub would ink pact with local academic institutes, IIT’s international universities, chambers, related associations to form a comprehensive collaborative framework.

Mr Atul Pande, President of VIA added that the help of the existing clusters like automobiles and available infrastructure would be of great help. Dr Suhas Buddhe, Hon. Secretary of VIA said that the entrepreneurs should encash the available opportunity. The speakers also replied to the queries of the participants at the programme.
